The Tate Modern wasn't the worst museum I've ever visited, in fact I rather liked some of it. But I'm afraid that I'm not refined enough to appreciate most of it. I firmly believe that modern and postmodern art is hard for even eager art fans to understand outside its original context because its so frequently nonrepresentational and targetted toward the artistic community itself. Sometimes I can look at the piece and say "that's cool/funny/unique/fabulous/subversive," but often the genius that is the work is lost on me.

Of course, when I do understand the millieu — especially with contemporary photography — the work is brilliant, and those who don't get it are peasants. ;-)

here are my eagerly-awaited comments:

1. your "abayas" link has a quote mark at the end, which is translating to %22 when the link is clicked... just thought you might want to know!

2. "this is england" looks awesome - top of my netflix queue! (well, when it is released...)

3. i am so sad that you guys didn't like the tate modern. i have heard great things about it (from RISD students, though, so they could have skewed tastes). hopefully i'll be able to form my own opinion someday.

4. awesome photos, of course!
